About the museum

The museum opened in 1934 in the premises of the Montichiari veterans’ association, at the wish of Mario Baratti. In 1940 the idea of a patriotic and religious memorial took shape, later pursued by Agostino Bianchi, to whom the museum is linked. In 1978 the Comune acquired ownership and began renovation work and the reorganisation of the collections; the museum reopened in 1983.

The current site is the former choir of the 17th-century church of Santa Maria del Suffragio, whose nave has become a memorial to the Montichiari dead of the national wars.

Around a thousand exhibits and documents are displayed in a single room of about 100 square metres, inside the original 1934 display cases. The route follows a chronological order from 1796 to 1945, from the Napoleonic campaigns through the wars of independence to the two world wars, and runs alongside a thematic reading: uniforms, firearms, equipment, war propaganda, military conscription and the nationalisation of the masses. Five stereoscopes from 1935 allow visitors to see around 250 photographs of the First World War in three dimensions. The museum aims to be a place of reflection and civic education.
