About the museum
The museum holds the collections gathered by Cesare Lombroso from 1859 onwards for his studies in criminal anthropology. In 1876 the doctor housed them in his own home; in 1877 they were moved to a laboratory in via Po, and in 1884 part of them was displayed at the Esposizione generale italiana (Italian General Exhibition) at the Valentino.
In 1896 the collection passed to the new seat of the Institute of Legal Medicine in via Michelangelo, where Mario Carrara, a pupil of Lombroso, reorganised it into six rooms and enriched it with material on scientific policing and legal medicine. In 1948 it followed the Institute to corso Galilei: no longer closed, but no longer open to visitors, it became a simple collection again, to which Lombroso’s study, donated by the family, was later added.
Rediscovered in the mid-1970s and partly presented in the exhibition “La scienza e la colpa” (Science and Guilt) of 1985, the collection found its present home in 2001 with the “Museo dell’Uomo” (Museum of Man) project. Today the museum is located in the Palazzo degli Istituti Anatomici in via Pietro Giuria, together with the Museo di Anatomia umana and the Museo della Frutta, and forms part of the Sistema Museale di Ateneo of the University of Turin.
