About the museum

In 2001 the Turin section of the Istituto sperimentale per la nutrizione delle piante (Experimental Institute for Plant Nutrition), which had been based in Via Ormea since 1895, had to find a new home for its collections, library, archive and laboratories. The collections, owned by the Turin section of the former ISNP (now CREA), were lent to the City of Turin and found space in a wing of the Palazzo degli Istituti Anatomici in Via Pietro Giuria, vacated by the Faculty of Agriculture. The museum opened on 12 February 2007.

The core consists of the artificial fruits modelled in the second half of the 19th century by Francesco Garnier Valletti (Giaveno 1808 – Turin 1889), who in 1853 had helped establish the Museo pomologico together with Auguste Burdin. The collection exceeds a thousand pieces and includes apples, pears, peaches, apricots, plums and grapes, alongside a pomological collection assembled between 1927 and 1935.

The route opens with a section devoted to the San Salvario district, a centre of botanical and agronomic research in Turin, with references to the Orto botanico (botanical garden) and the Burdin nurseries. Historic rooms have been reconstructed with original furnishings: the old laboratories of the Regia Stazione chimica agraria, founded in 1871, the room of the pomological collection, the library and the director’s study. The visit also invites reflection on biodiversity.
