About the museum
The museum is housed in Villa Renatico Martini, built around 1887 by the architects Spighi and Vivarelli in an eclectic style for the journalist and statesman Ferdinando Martini, a native of Monsummano. The name derives from the locality of Il Renatico. From 1988 the villa hosted the municipality's cultural exhibitions, and around 2000 it became the permanent home of the museum, which had been established in 1999.
In 2005 the building was adapted to the museum standards of the Tuscany Region, with air conditioning and fire-safety and alarm systems. In 2019 the villa's park was named after David Bowie.
The collection has grown mainly through donations from artists, families, collectors and enthusiasts. It includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, videos, photographs and installations by artists such as Pietro Annigoni, Vinicio Berti, Ferdinando Chevrier, Lamberto Pignotti, Eugenio Miccini, Ketty La Rocca and Sergio Scatizzi. The museum organises temporary exhibitions and educational activities, and runs the international printmaking biennial “Città di Monsummano Terme”. It also keeps a library specialised in 20th-century and contemporary art.
