About the museum
The museum is housed in the former Osteria dei Pellegrini, built by Ferdinando I de’ Medici between 1607 and 1616 to welcome visitors to the nearby shrine of Fontenuova. The building later served as the seat of the Comunità delle due Terre (1775) and as a chancellery (1833); bought by the local community in 1855, it housed a prison and a court, which remained there until the 1970s.
After restoration work in 1995–1998, the first floor of the museum opened on 12 December 1998; the second floor was inaugurated in June 2005. The route comprises an entrance section that introduces the visit and fifteen thematic sections.
The sections cover geology and palaeontology, ancient and medieval archaeology, the Padule di Fucecchio with its traditional boats, the Grand-Ducal farms and Medici villas, sacred art and popular devotion with the treasure of the Fontenuova shrine, thermal activities (Grotta Giusti), astronomy, emigration, and the Sala della Memoria (Hall of Memory) on the Nazi massacre at the Padule in 1944.
