About the museum
The house of the Giusti family, present in Monsummano since the 17th century, was enlarged and decorated between 1791 and 1793 by the poet's grandfather, Giuseppe di Alessandro Giusti. Here, in 1809, Giuseppe Giusti was born, a satirical poet known for his verses on the customs of his time and a friend of Gino Capponi, Giovan Pietro Vieusseux and Alessandro Manzoni.
The State bought the birthplace in 1972, and in 1992 it became a national museum. Since December 2014 it has been run by the Ministry of Culture, first through the Polo museale della Toscana (Tuscany museum hub) and, from December 2019, through the Direzione regionale Musei (regional museums directorate).
On the first floor, furnishings and objects recreate the romantic atmosphere of the early 19th century, with the portrait of the poet by Giuseppe Bezzuoli. On the second floor there is an extensive documentary section on Giusti's work and life. The 20th-century wing contains a conference room and a “sala della poesia” (poetry room) with a virtual route through 20th-century poetry. The museum runs monthly literature and history meetings with the association Amici di Casa Giusti.
