About the museum
The museum is named after Beato Angelico, born in Vicchio in the area between Rupecanina and Moriano. It arose from the need to protect the sacred works of the Mugello churches, which were often abandoned with the end of the peasant world linked to sharecropping. From 1967 a first nucleus of works was gathered in the Palazzo Municipale (town hall). The museum opened in 1967, closed in 1993 and reopened with the present display in 2000.
Today it is located in Piazza Don Milani, in the same building as the municipal library and historical archive, in front of the monument to Beato Angelico by Sergio Benvenuti (1987). The route is thematic: one large room holds works from the pievi (parish churches) of the Mugello, another the churches scattered across the territory, and one space is reserved for oratories, tabernacles and popular devotion. Information panels and settings link the paintings and liturgical furnishings to the religious culture of the place.
Among the works are a glazed terracotta sculpture of Saint John the Baptist attributed to Andrea della Robbia, the altarpiece by Neri di Bicci from the pieve of Pimonte, the polyptych by the Master of Montefoscoli, the Assumption by Cosimo Rosselli, the Annunciation by Francesco Furini and the monstrance attributed to Massimiliano Soldani Benzi. The museum is part of the Mugello diffuse museum project and of Piccoli Grandi Musei.
