About the museum
The Casa di Giotto stands on the hill of Vespignano, below the church of San Martino, in the municipality of Vicchio. It was a sober medieval building, regarded as the painter's birthplace, though in reality it was an annex of a larger manor house. A first major restoration took place in 1840; others followed at the end of the 19th century, with stone frames around the windows and a portal in a Gothic-revival style.
The earthquake of 1919 severely damaged it and caused the collapse of the entire first floor. From then on, with a temporary roof, it was used as a farm outbuilding and was long abandoned. The municipality of Vicchio bought it, and in 1967 it was restored under the guidance of the Soprintendenza, which clarified the building's original nature.
A further renovation in 2002 improved the structure and the museum display and made new cultural routes possible. Today the museum belongs to the municipality of Vicchio and, together with the Associazione Dalle Terre di Giotto e dell’Angelico, offers visits, workshops and educational activities; the ticket is combined with the Museo di Arte Sacra Beato Angelico.
