Temporarily closed. Due to structural problems the museum is closed until further notice and visits are suspended (notice of July 2024). Recovery and conservation work is being considered.

About the museum

The museum grew out of material accumulated over time in the premises of the Istituto di Chimica Generale of the Università di Genova, first in Via Balbi and then in Viale Benedetto XV. Instruments, glassware and apparatus, used for research and demonstration lessons, cover more than a century and a half of the history of chemistry.

At the beginning of the 1990s the material was recovered, reorganised and catalogued; in 1996 a volume was produced on the chemical instruments of a 19th-century laboratory. With the support of Regione Liguria the project became a museum-laboratory, in which the instruments are arranged according to their function. The official establishment of the Museo di Chimica by the Dipartimento di Chimica e Chimica Industriale dates back to the resolution of December 1999.

The collection comprises about 650 scientific objects and apparatus, partly dating from the years when Stanislao Cannizzaro taught in Genoa (1855–1861), such as analytical balances and glassware. Another group of instruments, from the 1930s, is linked to the processing of rare earth minerals. Watercolour plates from the late 19th century showing industrial chemical processes are also displayed. The museum is closed until further notice due to structural problems.
