About the museum
The Museum of Physics was founded in 1991 at the Department of Physics of the University of Genoa. It holds 276 scientific instruments from the Antico Gabinetto di Fisica (1784–1911) and 266 from the Istituto di Fisica (1911–1950); the oldest date from the second half of the 17th century.
The instruments cover all branches of physics, from mechanics to optics, from acoustics to electromagnetism and thermodynamics, and most were used in research by Genoese physicists from the late 18th century onwards. Teaching and demonstration apparatus are also present.
Part of the instruments (187) is displayed in chronological and thematic order in 12 display cases on the sixth and seventh floors of the department. The museum is used for university teaching and for meetings with schools; the instruments and the activity of the Gabinetto di Fisica are still the subject of study.
