About the museum
The Museattivo Claudio Costa is a museum of painting and sculpture housed in the former psychiatric hospital of Quarto dei Mille, in Genoa. Founded within the Istituto per le Materie e le Forme Inconsapevoli (I.M.F.I.), it was named after its founder, the artist Claudio Costa, who died in 1995. Among its inspirations was the Brazilian psychiatrist Nise da Silveira.
The collection brings together paintings, mixed-media works and sculptures by artists, some of international renown such as Costa himself, placed alongside works by patients of the former hospital and by people who used art as therapeutic support. Critics regard the whole museum as a work of art by Costa.
After his death, sculpture was applied more fully as a therapeutic technique, and the museum was completed by an outdoor section, the Giardino delle Sculture, opened on 23 April 1999. Today the whole museum has been moved to one of the buildings near the therapeutic community Casa Michelini, while the Giardino delle Sculture has been relocated to the gardens of the complex.
