About the museum
The University of Trieste museum, linked to the Department of Mathematics, Informatics and Earth Sciences, occupies one wing of the “O” building in the San Giovanni complex. It comprises three exhibition rooms, a teaching room and two laboratories for cataloguing and studying minerals and rocks.
In the entrance hall a large specimen of rose quartz welcomes visitors, and the display cases illustrate mineral colours, precious stones, mineral associations, twinning, the Mohs scale, crystal forms, silicates in rocks, mantle nodules and minerals typical of the Tre Venezie. Two rooms house the systematic collection of minerals and the collection of rocks; there is also an online catalogue of minerals.
Among the most recent acquisitions is a fossil trunk of Triassic araucaria, about 220 million years old, around 2 metres long and weighing 1,015 kg, from the petrified forest of Arizona and donated by UniCredit.
