About the museum
The Trieste section of the Museo Nazionale dell’Antartide “Felice Ippolito” is located in the Parco di San Giovanni, in the area of the former psychiatric hospital, and is run together with the University of Trieste. The national museum is spread over several sites; the Trieste site focuses mainly on the history of polar exploration and on marine geology and geophysics.
The permanent exhibition, of around 800 square metres, presents original historic maps, the pioneers of Antarctic exploration Robert Falcon Scott, Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton, and Italian expeditions from the early 20th century up to the Programma Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide (PNRA). Two sections are devoted to private expeditions: the Ajmone-Cat collection, with the missions of 1969–1971 and 1973–1974 aboard the steam launch San Giuseppe Due (room opened in 2019), and the Cepparo collection, with the 1975 expedition, the first entirely independent Italian one, which contributed to Italy’s accession to the Antarctic Treaty in 1981.
Interactive stations and multimedia content also illustrate the Antarctic environment, climate and palaeoclimate.
