About the museum
The museum is housed in a building that rose when Anghiari was growing beyond its original walls, next to the vanished Porta degli Auspici, demolished in 1612, where the old charcoal stores once stood. Over the centuries the palazzo was enlarged and restored several times. The coat of arms above one of the portals recalls the Angelieri family, while the name of the building is linked to the Florentine Marzocco, the lion statue placed in 1526 on the corner of the palazzo by Ilioneo Taglieschi and brought down in 1944 by bombing (a copy is now visible).
The museum presents itself as the only one dedicated to the battle of Anghiari of 29 June 1440 and to Leonardo da Vinci's lost painting, and at the same time tells the history of the town: from prehistory to the Roman period, up to the early firearms, with reconstructions, objects and documents. The route includes a room with an immersive video on the battle and on the production of Anghiari's armourers, the Sala della Battaglia (Battle Room) with objects and memorabilia, a selection of archaeological finds from the area, and rooms devoted to contemporary art and to the Anghiari painter F. Vagnetti.
After almost a year of works financed by the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) call of the Ministero della Cultura (Italian Ministry of Culture) to remove physical and cognitive barriers, the museum has reopened with a new entrance ramp, an internal lift and a guide in CAA language.
