About the museum

The Museo Civico di Paleontologia e Mineralogia of Campomorone was set up in 1977–78 and opened in 1980. It is located on the top floor of Palazzo Balbi, the seat of the municipality, and comprises three exhibition rooms, an educational workshop and a room for audiovisual presentations and lectures.

The collection numbers about 2,000 pieces, largely fossils from the Ligurian-Piedmontese basin, a room of minerals, and display cases that reconstruct prehistory in Liguria; one case presents scale reproductions of dinosaurs. The last room is devoted to the origin and evolution of humans, with particular reference to Liguria, and uses models to show how the ancestors lived and built their dwellings. Recorded audio commentaries accompany the visit.

The mineral and fossil rooms were renovated in 1999 and 2000. Since 1987 the museum has offered an educational workshop for nursery and compulsory-school classes, and many classes from Genoa visit it every year.
