About the museum
The museum was inaugurated and opened to the public on 22 November 1986 and is housed in the Italian Red Cross headquarters in Campomorone, between the second floor and the attic of the building. Over the years the rooms have been expanded several times with new equipment.
For the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Italian Red Cross, on 15 June 2014, the display was renewed with a chronological route that begins in 1848, with the precursors Ferdinando Palasciano and Florence Nightingale, and runs up to 2010. The story covers the Battle of Solferino, the work of Henry Dunant, the founding of the International Committee, the establishment of the Italian Red Cross in Milan in 1864 and the first Geneva Convention.
The eleven rooms, the panels along the staircase and the attic, where the setting of a hospital and other military rescue situations is recreated, bring together around 500 objects: documents and period photographs from the two world wars, philatelic material, postcards and letters to and from prisoner-of-war camps, medical equipment and rescue vehicles such as wheeled stretchers, a 1950 Lancia Ardea 900 ambulance, a Fiat Campagnola and vintage motorcycles.
