About the museum
The Museo di San Francesco in Mercatello sul Metauro occupies the sacristy and the upper floor of the former Franciscan convent, next to the church built by the friars from 1235. From 1926, when restorations returned the church to its original Franciscan simplicity, works from the town and the surrounding area were placed there.
As the collections grew and the displays were revised, works removed from their original context were taken out of the church, and the exhibition spaces expanded to occupy much of the former convent. The route presents an overview of the historical and artistic testimonies produced or commissioned over the centuries by the local Christian community: paintings, sculptures and liturgical objects, divided into sections such as Saint Francis (14th–15th and 16th–17th centuries), Santa Croce, Pieve Collegiata, local schools and visiting masters, and works recovered from the churches of the vicariate.
An archaeological section houses memories of the convent and the Amantini collection of Etruscan, Italic and Apulian ceramics and terracottas, donated to the museum in 2008. A project funded by the PNRR (Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan) aims to improve the physical, cognitive and sensory accessibility of the museum.
