About the museum
The Antiquarium nazionale di Sestino, in the upper Valmarecchia of Arezzo province, holds Roman-era finds from excavations carried out in the area. The collection took shape during the 19th century and is now a state museum. Testimonies from the Roman period form the core of the display.
The epigraphic section includes cippi and tablets from the imperial age (1st–4th century AD) with dedicatory and funerary inscriptions; among them stand out those linked to the local Volusenii family, possibly of Etruscan origin. The sculpture section features a statue of Aphrodite, a colossal head of Augustus, a statue of a youth, reliefs and a circular funerary monument in Hellenistic style. Other pieces include a relief depicting the martyrdom of Christians and a glirarium, the terracotta vessel used to breed dormice. One section is devoted to household objects.
The reconstructed small Augustan temple is considered one of the highlights of local archaeology. According to some sources the museum is housed in the Pieve di San Pancrazio. The sources consulted do not agree on whether the museum is open: some list it as temporarily closed, others as open at weekends.
