About the museum
The Museo del Carbonaio in Borgo Pace, in the upper Metauro valley, is located in Le Conce, in the restored premises of a former tannery near the historic centre and the point where the streams Meta and Auro join to form the Metauro river. The building also houses the Aula Verde, seat of the environmental education centre.
The museum is dedicated to the trade of charcoal burning, still practised in the area, and documents its stages: felling the wood, building the charcoal kiln (carbonaia), the long burning of the wood and the unloading of the charcoal. The account relies above all on black-and-white photographs by Pierpaolo Zani of the life and work of the charcoal burners; the rooms also house an aquarium of river fish.
The trade is commemorated every year at the Sagra del Carbonaio (charcoal burners’ festival), held in Borgo Pace on the second Sunday of October.
