About the museum
The museum was founded by the Comune di Aulla in 1981 and is housed in the Fortezza della Brunella, a Renaissance-style fortification built in the 16th century on a rocky spur above the town. Since 1984 management and educational activities have been entrusted to the Cooperativa Natour.
The fortress, bought by the State in 1977 after being turned into a residence by the English Waterfield family at the start of the 20th century, offers a route through four rooms dedicated to the natural environments of the Magra basin, from the valley floor to the hills, the mountains and the sub-mountain belt. Explanatory panels and specimens illustrate the biodiversity of the Lunigiana.
The collections fall into three areas: botany includes the Ferrarini herbarium and a trunk used for dendrochronology; zoology brings together preserved animals, insects and skeletons; mineralogy displays local rocks and a fragment of a fossil mastodon tusk. From the hanging garden there is a view over the Lunigiana, the Apennines and the Apuan Alps.
