About the museum

The ecomuseum is housed in Lusuolo Castle, in the municipality of Mulazzo, in Lunigiana, a castle that passed from the State to the municipality. Until recently it housed the Museum of Emigration of the People of Tuscany.

Thanks to PNRR funding of around €300,000, supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Region of Tuscany as part of the National Strategy for Inner Areas, the display has been completely renewed. It opened on 6 June 2026 as the Ecomuseo del Magra e delle Aree Interne Lunigianesi, “EM Mulazzo”. The route is broader and uses digital and multimedia tools.

The sections are dedicated to Alessandro Malaspina, a navigator born in Mulazzo, with his expeditions, botanical and zoological studies and cartography; to a route through Lunigiana, from statue-stele to medieval castles, from the Via Francigena to Dante in Mulazzo; and to the booksellers of Montereggio and the publisher Emanuele Maucci of Parana. For the 2026 tourist season, management has been entrusted to the cooperative Sigeric, a partner of the municipality.
