About the museum
The dispersed museum was opened in 2003 on the site of an important Messapian settlement, identified in the second half of the 19th century by Sigismondo Castromediano and later investigated by numerous archaeological campaigns. Access to the park is via the “Balcone sulla Storia”, an artificial terrace ten metres high that separates the modern town from the ancient settlement.
In 2015 the MUDI, the Museo Didattico Archeologico (Archaeological Educational Museum), was opened in a former nursery school restored by the municipality. The display focuses on the transformation, in the mid-6th century BC, of a village of Iron Age huts into a town with the first urban structures, with three-dimensional reconstructions of scenes of daily life. In the outdoor area, an experimental full-scale reconstruction of a house from the mid-6th century BC has been built.
