About the museum
The Museo della tarsia was founded in 1994 together with the Documentation and Research Centre, to document the art of wood marquetry (intarsio ligneo), which took hold in Rolo from the second half of the 18th century. The earliest documented example is the pulpit of Rolo's church, made in 1752 by Giuseppe Preti. The museum is housed in several rooms of the town hall.
The exhibition explores cabinetmaking and the decorative techniques of marquetry, with attention to local cabinetmakers and comparisons with other production areas. Explanatory panels accompany more than thirty pieces, including tables, chests, wardrobes and other furniture. Rolo production is characterised by fine tendrils (racemi) of light wood, sometimes with berries or small flowers, and by townscapes inspired by the Renaissance.
The route, from the raw material to the finished piece of furniture, also documents the history of a craft district that at certain periods employed hundreds of workers. The collection is completed by tools of the trade and a small section of drawings and prints. The museum also functions as a documentation centre and as a venue for training and restoration courses.
