About the museum
The museum is part of the Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese, within the itinerary devoted to daily life, and is housed at Rivoreta, a hamlet of the municipality of Abetone Cutigliano. The route tells the story of the inhabitants of the Apennines from past centuries to the present day, through work tools, everyday objects, images, sounds and stories.
The approach is participatory: visitors are invited to try for themselves the “making with the hands” of a pre-industrial society. The main themes include life in the mountains and the activities of gathering and transport, with which communities coped with the difficulties of the Apennine environment. One area is devoted to the charcoal burner and the technical skills of his trade.
In a restored ancient metato (chestnut-drying building) the Sezione della lana (wool section) is set up, with a large loom from the early 20th century and its accessories, where it is also possible to try weaving. The Laboratorio del giocattolo (toy workshop) allows children and young people to build simple traditional games from recycled materials. Only part of the collection is on display, and the objects are rotated every year. On the last Sunday of July the village celebrates the Giornata del Museo Vivente (Living Museum Day), when residents re-enact trades, gestures and rites linked to the museum.
