About the museum

The Museo diocesano di Faenza occupies a section of the episcopal residence, a building whose origins date back to the 12th century and which preserves traces of several periods, including 13th-century structures, 14th-century frescoes, remains of a marble loggia from Verona and Renaissance floors. The most prestigious room is the upper hall of the medieval period, today called the Sala degli Affreschi (Hall of Frescoes).

The route runs along the Monterenzi wing of the palace and includes the Sala degli Affreschi, the Sala del Trono (Throne Room) and the episcopal chapel. At the entrance stands a limestone baptismal font of 1476, linked to the da Maiano family and to the Cathedral. The display brings together about three hundred works from the 10th to the 20th century, among altarpieces, sacred furnishings and furniture, and tells the story of the Christian communities of the whole diocesan territory, not only of the Cathedral.

Among the most important items are the gold-ground panels of the Master of San Pier Damiano (early 15th century), works by Carlo Cignani, Cristoforo Savolini, Ercole Graziani the Younger and Cristoforo Unterperger, the Nativity of Zattaglia of 1497, a Madonna and Child of the 15th-century Florentine school and a plaque with Saint Apollinaris of 1582. The palace also hosts temporary exhibitions of ancient and contemporary art from time to time.
