About the museum
The museum was founded in 1972 on the initiative of the Pro Loco of Terra del Sole, with the aim of preserving evidence of the Romagna peasant and craft world that was disappearing. Over time it has been extended and restructured, up to the present display, whose content has been renewed.
It is housed in the Palazzo Pretorio, or Palazzo dei Commissari Granducali (Palace of the Grand-Ducal Commissioners), which overlooks the Piazza d’Armi of Terra del Sole, the fortress city founded in 1564 by Cosimo I de’ Medici as the last fortress with administrative, military, judicial and religious functions in Tuscan Romagna.
The route is spread across 25 rooms and two itineraries. The historical-architectural itinerary passes through the Salone dei Commissari and other restored rooms, with parts of Renaissance frescoes and the criminal court room decorated with the coats of arms of the commissioners. The ethno-anthropological itinerary recreates the settings and trades of peasant and sharecropping life up to the 1940s, from the farmhouse (casa colonica) to the ancient crafts.
