About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Acerenza is housed in the Palazzo Vescovile, next to the cathedral, and holds a collection of sacred art objects from different periods.
The items on display include liturgical vestments and 18th-century Neapolitan silverware, wooden and marble sculptures, paintings and manuscripts. An archaeological and lapidary section presents finds dating from the 9th century BC to the 4th century AD, from the areas of Serra d’Altura and Monte Laguardia. A particular piece is the marble bust of the Emperor Julian the Apostate, which for centuries was identified as Saint Canio, patron saint of the town. The museum also holds a collection of carved wooden pieces with sacred subjects, made by local craftsmen.
