About the museum
At Rossano di Vaglio lie the remains of the federal sanctuary of the Lucanians, dedicated to the goddess Mefitis, an ancient deity worshipped in southern Italy as a protector against malarial fevers and the noxious vapours of stagnant water, and also of fields and flocks. The sanctuary began in the 4th century BC and developed mainly during the 2nd century BC, as part of the Romanisation of Lucania.
The remains are visible within the Parco del Santuario di Rossano. Finds from the area, including tomb goods and armour, are preserved and presented in the archaeological museums of the district; the nearby Museo delle antiche genti di Lucania in Vaglio Basilicata presents the sanctuary together with the settlement of Serra di Vaglio.
