About the museum

The Museo diocesano di Fabriano, which belongs to the diocese of Fabriano-Matelica, was inaugurated on 8 September 2015 and occupies the ground floor of the Palazzo Vescovile. It aims to document the journey of the Church of Fabriano over the centuries.

The historical itinerary begins in the 10th and 11th centuries, when the Fabriano area began to acquire a cultural and social identity thanks to the numerous Benedictine settlements, and reaches 1785, the year in which Fabriano was raised to the rank of city and seat of a diocese, united with Matelica. Of particular significance is the period between the 14th and 15th centuries, when the Fabriano school of painting, nourished by the Giottesque experience of Assisi and then by the personality of Gentile da Fabriano, produced an extraordinary flowering of artists and works.

The rooms house paintings, sculptures, prints, sacred vessels, furnishings, reliquaries and liturgical vestments made by local and non-local artists, craftsmen and workshops, who impressed upon their works the religious sense and devotion of the Christian community.
