About the museum
The Diocesan Museum of Iglesias was established in 2009 by Bishop Giovanni Paolo Zedda to preserve and promote the historic and artistic heritage of a sacred nature in the diocese. A scientific committee chaired by the bishop oversees its activities.
The main exhibition route is located in the complex of the Cathedral of Santa Chiara. Activities began on 17 November 2013, on the occasion of the reopening of the cathedral after a long restoration, with an exhibition on the history of the Church of Iglesias from its origins to the 18th century, produced together with the Archivio Storico Diocesano.
The museum holds much of the so-called Treasury of the Cathedral, that is, the most precious sacred furnishings. A section devoted to the sacred architecture of the diocese is linked to the former Jesuit complex of the Purissima.
