About the museum
The museum is housed in the Giorgio Asproni Mining Institute, founded in 1871 on the initiative of Quintino Sella, then Minister of Finance in the Lanza government. Together with the Museo dell’Arte Mineraria it forms the Museo Istituto Minerario di Iglesias.
The collection includes almost 3,800 mineralogical, petrographic and fossil samples from all over the world and around one hundred archaeological finds linked to mining activity, covering the Nuragic, Phoenician-Punic, Roman, medieval Pisan and Aragonese periods. The route occupies three large rooms with display cases of minerals, fossils and industrial archaeology. It includes local minerals and fossils as well as teaching collections.
The first room, “I mattoni della Terra”, was reopened in 2018 with a multimedia display on the geology of the Iglesiente and on the landscape through geological time.
