About the museum
The museum is in the former Genna Luas mine, a few kilometres south of Iglesias. It was built by ENI in the early years of the new millennium, next to the open-pit mine of Funtana Perda, and opened in 2001 as the Museo del Lavoro Minerario (Museum of Mining Work). The Comune di Iglesias later entrusted the building to the Associazione per il Parco Geominerario Storico e Ambientale della Sardegna.
The structure preserves the winch of the Morra shaft, which gave access to the underground site of Funtana Perda, and the headframe (castelletto) overlooking the garden. The museum offers an introduction to the Earth sciences and illustrates the geological evolution of the territory and the Sardinian environment.
It has a large exhibition hall, a library specialising in geology and natural sciences and a 50-seat projection room for documentaries and presentations. The garden, with a small wood of cork oaks and picnic tables, can be used for a rest.
