About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Ortona opened to the public on 13 December 2003 and is considered one of the most important sacred art museums in Abruzzo. It occupies three large rooms, created from ancient chapels, on the ground floor of the Cathedral of San Tommaso Apostolo.
The collections hold the religious heritage recovered after the damage suffered by the city's churches during the Second World War: goldsmiths' work and silverware, stone artefacts, liturgical furnishings, a small numismatic collection and a section of archaeological finds. The first room, the former chapel of the Rosary, is devoted to paintings from the 15th to the 17th century.
The museum welcomes individual visitors and groups, and offers guided tours as a means of making the route accessible to everyone.
