About the museum
The Museo Diocesano di Lanciano was opened to the public in 2002 to bring together, in rooms covering around 1,000 square metres, more than five hundred works from the vast artistic heritage of the Archdiocese of Lanciano-Ortona, bearing witness to the artistic and religious history of the Frentani church. It is housed in the Bishop’s Palace.
The route is divided into nine rooms. The visit begins with the wooden model of the cathedral façade, made in 1955 by the cabinetmaker Giuseppe Pasetto. The second room is dedicated to the Madonna del Ponte, patron saint of the town, with ex votos, sacred goldsmith work, the model by Giacinto Diano (1788) for the lost fresco decoration of the dome, and the treasure of the Madonna, a collection of jewels from the 17th to the 20th century with two silk dresses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Further rooms are devoted to the veneration of the Virgin and the saints, to the figure of Christ and the Redemption, to the dressed statues known as conocchie, to reliquaries and, at the end, to a set of vestments from the mid-18th century.
A free app with an audio guide for Android and iPhone is available for the visit.
