About the museum
The Diocesan Museum of San Marco Argentano is housed in the small church of San Giovanni, in the historic Piazza Vincenzo Selvaggi. The building is documented from 1209 by a parchment in the Aldobrandini archive, and at the end of the 16th century it housed the Congrega dell’Immacolata Concezione (Congregation of the Immaculate Conception). Over time it was altered by earthquakes, and today the church is deconsecrated.
The museum was inaugurated on 25 May 2006, and its exhibition hall hosted the sacred art exhibition “Il Vivente – tesori della liturgia e della devozione” (The Living One – treasures of liturgy and devotion), with works from the cathedral, the Episcopio (bishop’s residence) and various parishes of the diocese of San Marco Argentano-Scalea, organised in collaboration with the heritage authorities (Soprintendenze) of Calabria.
