About the museum
The Centro iconografico Arbëresh (C.I.AR.) is housed in the historic Palazzo Miceli, in the Serra di Leo district of Mongrassano, built in 1750 for the Miceli barons. Today the palace belongs to the municipality and also houses the municipal library and the municipal language desk. The administration intends to turn it into a multipurpose centre for research and cultural activities.
The permanent exhibition arose from collaboration between the municipality, the cultural association “Bashkim Kulturor Arbëresh” of Spezzano Albanese and the language desk, as part of a cultural policy aimed at protecting and promoting Arbëreshë identity.
The route is divided into two areas. On the ground floor, six rooms present material culture: objects and photographs, without reconstructed settings, give a picture of domestic life and work in the Arbëreshë communities of the area until about fifty years ago, with captions in Arbërisht, in Calabrian dialect, in Italian and, where possible, in English. On the first floor, seven rooms illustrate traditional practices, arranged in the cycle of the year (from Christmas to Easter, Marian and village festivals, pilgrimages, musical instruments) and the cycle of life (from birth to marriage). The wedding room displays the traditional costumes of Mongrassano.
