About the museum
The Jewish community of Turin, present in the city since 1424, built its current synagogue after handing over to the Comune the building begun by Alessandro Antonelli, which later became the Mole Antonelliana. The Tempio Israelitico (Israelite Temple) was completed in 1884 to a design by Enrico Petiti, in an eclectic style with a predominantly Moorish character and a basilica plan with three naves.
The interior decoration was destroyed in a bombing in 1942. In 1986–1987 the hall was adapted to local liturgical tradition, with a new tevà (reading platform) at the centre and the seats facing it.
In the basement, the Tempio Piccolo (Small Temple) has been in daily use since 1970; it houses the Piedmontese Baroque furnishings from the synagogue of Chieri. In the gallery surrounding it, a permanent exhibition presents a selection of ceremonial art objects linked to Jewish rites and to the artistic traditions of the Piedmontese communities. Next to it is a third, very small synagogue with an aron (Torah ark) that may have belonged to the German synagogue of the New Ghetto of Turin.
