About the museum
The Ecomuseo dell’Alta Val Sangone grew out of research on objects of material culture carried out in the 1990s by the Scuola Media (lower secondary school) of Coazze, and was established by the Region of Piedmont in 1999. It operates in the municipalities of Coazze, Giaveno and Valgioie and deals with hemp weaving, the industrial history of the valley (the Garida talc mine and old paper mills), bread-making traditions, the Franco-Provençal language, local products and the Resistance.
The Coazze site, in the former town hall in Viale Italia, also houses the tourist office. Since 2022 the Ecomuseo della Resistenza in Val Sangone has been set up there as a permanent exhibition, realised with the support of the Metropolitan City of Turin within the Pa.C.E. project; the re-display brought new panels and a relief model with information and paths of the area. Among the objects on display is a 19th-century hemp loom, recovered by the master craftsman Bruno Tessa.
Since 2010 the site has also been the Centro Rete della Val Sangone (Val Sangone network centre) within the “Memoria delle Alpi” project. The nearby Garida talc mine, in Forno di Coazze, is managed separately by the association GECO, which organises guided tours every month.
