About the museum
The museum is located in Casalbeltrame, in the Novara area, in a large courtyard surrounded by farm buildings, the so-called Cascinale dei Nobili. The space is punctuated by five churches of decreasing size, nicknamed “matryoshka” churches, whose presence is linked to the tradition of an ancient Templar mansio in the village.
The visit begins under the large arched portico and is accompanied by a narrator, the “caminant”, an itinerant handyman who told stories on the farms. The visit follows the rhythm of the seasons in the rice fields and tells the story of the farmhands and rice-weeders (mondine) through tools, customs, traditions and songs. Multimedia content can be viewed on a tablet or smartphone.
The second section is a gallery of carts, tools and machines, both old and more recent, used in rice processing. Some of the churches serve as exhibition rooms, and the visit ends with a short walk among the rice fields of Casalbeltrame.
