About the museum
Casa Forte, also known as “Schtei Hüs” (stone house), stands in the hamlet of Ponte di Formazza, in the upper Val d'Ossola, and was built in 1569 by the notary Antonio Zur Schmitten. Unlike the typical wooden Walser houses of the valley, the building is made of stone, reflecting the rank of the person who commissioned it.
The house now hosts an ethnographic museum dedicated to everyday life in the Walser community of Formazza. The route includes a prison with a barred window, a period kitchen, the hall of the local assembly, a Walser room and a collection of traditional tools.
The museum is open in the summer season. For information and visits you can contact the Pro Loco of Formazza, the tourist office or the telephone number of Casa Forte.
