About the museum

The collection is named after the magistrate Luigi Cocco (Villasor 1883 – Cagliari 1959), who from the 1920s of the 20th century until the end of his life gathered objects of Sardinian folk art, first in his native village and then in various parts of the island. By 1937 much of the material had been brought together and was shown at ethnographic exhibitions.

In 1948 the Ministry of Education declared the collection a complex of exceptional artistic and historical interest, and in 1954 the Regione Sardegna bought it by regional law. After renovation work on the regional pavilion of the Cittadella dei Musei, the Istituto Superiore Regionale Etnografico (ISRE) has displayed it permanently.

The collection comprises around 2,000 objects, mostly from the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century: 731 textile items, mainly from the centre-south of the island and woven on the horizontal loom; 1,266 jewellery pieces, mostly silver, linked to clothing and personal adornment; and a smaller number of tools, furniture and carved works.
