About the museum
The San Pancrazio bastion was built between 1501 and 1503 at the wish of the viceroy Joan Dusay to defend the northern gate of Cagliari; the viceroy’s coat of arms, with three red mullets, appears on the lintel. With the spread of firearms its structure was soon judged obsolete.
Over the centuries it had various uses: military prison, from 1824 a hospital for prisoners and, after the prison administration abandoned it at the end of the 19th century, a store for excavation materials of the Soprintendenza archeologica (archaeological heritage authority). Restorations in the 1990s allowed its use as an exhibition space; today the bastion is part of the Cittadella dei Musei.
The space displays a collection of stone material and coats of arms, from the 13th century onwards, which documents the urban and social development of the city.
