About the museum
The Pinacoteca nazionale occupies part of the former military arsenal of Cagliari, in the Cittadella dei Musei, and has been open to the public there since 1992. Its original nucleus was formed by works that passed to the State after the suppression of church property in 1866, and by works recovered from the demolition of the church of San Francesco di Stampace in 1875.
The collections, more than 1,200 pieces including paintings, goldwork, textiles, weapons, ceramics and sculptures, comprise paintings by Sardinian artists from the 16th to the 20th century, works of the Genoese, Neapolitan and Roman schools, and a rich collection of Sardinian and Catalan retables, considered the most interesting part of the museum. Among the notable pieces is a 12th-century bronze ewer of Byzantine culture, acquired in 1919.
The Pinacoteca is part of the Musei nazionali di Cagliari together with the Museo archeologico nazionale: a single ticket allows entry to both.
