About the museum
The votive museum is part of the sanctuary of the Madonna di Montenero, on the hills above Livorno, a pilgrimage destination for the people of Livorno and seafarers. According to tradition, in 1345 a shepherd brought a miraculous image of the Virgin up the mountain. Since 1792 the sanctuary has been entrusted to the Vallombrosan Benedictine monks.
Over the centuries the faithful have left the sanctuary thousands of painted panels in thanks for graces received. The collection now displayed in the rooms around the church includes at least 700 pieces, dating from the early 19th century to the present. Many scenes show shipwrecks and the rescue of fishing boats, sailing ships and steamers, but there are also episodes of everyday life from different periods.
Among the best-known works are “Il cavallino” by Giovanni Fattori, “Il motociclista” by Renato Natali and a large view of the port of Livorno, also by Natali.
