About the museum
The museum opened on 21 March 2025 on the first floor of the Granai of Villa Mimbelli in Livorno. The collection belongs to Dr Nicola Molea and has been lent to the municipality of Livorno; the scientific programme was curated by a committee led by the art historian Pierluigi Carofano.
The display is organised in themes that follow a common chronological thread but invite visitors to look at the Medici from new points of view. The first part concerns the founding of the city and the relationship between the Medici and Livorno. Further sections cover the history of the dynasty (rise to power and the papacy, the grand duchy, politics and court intrigues), the Knights of Santo Stefano, portraits of the family, and the marriages and women of the Medici household.
Paintings, drawings, objects, medals, coins and curiosities linked to daily life at the time are on display. The paper part of the collection includes letters from the grand dukes and grand duchesses and a copy of the family pact drawn up by Gian Gastone with the Infante of Spain, later taken up by Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici in the agreement with the House of Lorraine.
