About the museum
The museum is housed in Villa Maria, in Livorno, in the building known as the castelletto at the entrance to the villa, on Via Calzabigi. It holds documents, photographs, autographs, diplomas, correspondence and memorabilia linked to Pietro Mascagni (1863–1945), the Livorno-born musician who wrote Cavalleria rusticana.
The route follows the composer’s output in chronological order, starting from his best-known opera, of which the autograph manuscript is preserved. The collection also includes an archive of around 800 letters, a collection of photographs and some pianos. The site also functions as a centre for musicological documentation.
According to older guides, visits took place by appointment. The Musei online register and the Touring Club list the museum as temporarily closed, and some recent guides indicate that the musical part of the collection is now linked to the Teatro Goldoni, where the guided route “Itinerari mascagnani” is offered.
