About the museum
The museum is located in a wing of the Capuchin convent in Cagliari, next to the cloister, in vaulted rooms that were once the burial place of the friars. It is dedicated to Fra Nicola da Gesturi (1882–1958), a Capuchin friar born in Gesturi, in the Giara, who lived in the convent for thirty-four years. He was declared blessed in 1999 by Pope John Paul II; the cause for canonisation is ongoing.
The display was renewed at the request of the Vice-Postulation that follows the cause. The rooms present the friar’s life with texts and paintings along a Franciscan route built around the motif of the vine. They show his personal objects, such as his sandals, cloak, glasses and kneeler, documents linked to the beatification process, bronze sculptures, ex-votos, the headstone of his tomb in the Bonaria cemetery and remnants of the coffin. A video traces Fra Nicola’s life, and a series of photographs documents the funeral of 10 June 1958, which was followed by a large crowd.
The museum also commemorates Sant’Ignazio da Laconi (1701–1781) and Fra Nicola da San Vero Milis (1631–1707).
