About the museum

The Premio Suzzara was founded in 1948 on the initiative of Dino Villani, with the support of the mayor Tebe Mignoni and Cesare Zavattini. Alongside the experts, the jury included a factory worker, a clerk and a farmer, and the prizes were local products, in keeping with the slogan “Un vitello per un quadro” (“A calf for a painting”). One of the longest-running competitions of contemporary art in Italy, it was interrupted in 1976 after its twenty-eighth edition and resumed in 1989.

The works acquired through the prize form the core of the Galleria civica d’arte moderna e contemporanea, founded in 1975; the Museo Galleria del Premio Suzzara was established as a museum in 2002. The collection exceeds 800 works, acquired since the post-war period.

Artists represented in the 1940s and 1950s include Armando Pizzinato, Renato Guttuso, Giuseppe Zigaina, Renato Birolli, Aligi Sassu, Giulio Turcato and Titina Maselli; for more recent art, the collection includes, among others, Mauro Staccioli, Nicola Carrino, Giosetta Fioroni, Concetto Pozzati and Gianni Colombo. The museum runs educational activities linked to the prize and keeps a photographic archive of the works.
