GEOMuseum Radein

Museum in the Peter-Rosegger-Haus in Redagno with fossils and reptile footprints from the Bletterbach gorge, a UNESCO heritage site.

Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

The museum is located in the Peter-Rosegger-Haus, next to the church of Redagno, a hamlet of Aldino, a few kilometres from the Bletterbach gorge. It was founded on the initiative of Josef Perwanger, a passionate scholar of the fossil traces of the area, and was completely renovated in May 2006.

The first section tells the history of the Earth between 286 and 210 million years ago, with fossil plants, petrified salt crystals, raindrop impressions, footprints of reptiles and dinosaurs, molluscs and ancient fish: evidence of a great sea that once covered Redagno, Aldino and the Bletterbach. In the second part a film illustrates the gorge, and a three-dimensional model shows what the territory looked like millions of years ago.

Since 2004 the Bletterbach has been a geopark, and since 2009 it has been part of the UNESCO natural heritage of the Dolomites. The museum is a good starting point for walks in the gorge and is run together with the Bletterbach visitor centre.
