About the museum
Villa Luxoro, set in the greenery of the last stretch of the Nervi parks, in the Capolungo area, was built in 1903 to a design by Pietro Luxoro and was conceived from the outset as a house museum. The architect drew inspiration from the Genoese villas of the Renaissance and of the 17th and 18th centuries, as shown by the corner loggia and the painted decorations of the façades, and reused numerous 18th-century tiles inside and outside.
The brothers Giuseppe (a doctor), Pietro (an engineer and lecturer at the Accademia Ligustica) and Matteo Luxoro, nephews of the painter Tammar Luxoro, were passionate collectors. They decided to donate the villa and all their works of art to the Comune of Genoa, so that it would become a public museum named after Giannettino, Giuseppe's only son, who died young during the First World War. The property passed to the Comune in 1945, and the house museum has been open to visitors since 1951.
The collections mainly concern the Ligurian decorative arts of the 17th and 18th centuries: paintings, furniture, ceramics, silverware, mirrors, carved frames and antique textiles. Particularly important are the collection of 17th- and 18th-century nativity figures and the collection of antique clocks and pendulum clocks, with rare night clocks and the monumental models by the Roman workshop of the Campani. The picture gallery includes paintings by Alessandro Magnasco and portraits of the 18th-century Genoese school. The various spaces have kept their original purpose, to give the impression of being guests of a 19th-century collector. After its closure in 2016, the villa partly reopened on 1 November 2024.
